Everyone knows of the activist origins of Free and OpenSource Software (FOSS). But is FOSS today still fundamentally an activist attack on commercial software? Who are the maintainers building and maintaining FOSS? What is the place of FOSS in society? And if that changed, are our discourse and models of FOSS maintainers and how to help them have the most positive impact on society still useful? This talk tries to explore the topic and maybe even offer some answers, supported by real empirical data.
